Grace Maurine Standley Wilson

Maurine Standley Wilson Grace Maurine Standley was born in the Cottonwood community of Madison County on November 3, 1926, to Grace Madole and Sam Standley. She passed away in the early morning of Monday, September 11, 2017, in Crockett, Texas. It was a quick peaceful parting after spending a joyous weekend with her great-grandchildren. Maurine attended first grade in Cottonwood’s one-room school house before transferring to Madisonville schools, from which she graduated as salutatorian in 1944. After attending Sam Houston State Teachers college for two years, she returned to Madisonville to begin teaching seventh grade English. While teaching in Madisonville, she married, had a daughter, and finished her degree. In 1955, she and her daughter Connie moved to Galena Park, and she began teaching at Galena Park High School. As a single parent, she taught full time at the high school, taught shorthand and business English two nights a week, typed oil and gas leases-on a standard typewriter with many carbon copies-the other nights and on the weekends, and earned a master’s degree. She cooked dinner every night and never complained of being over-worked. When San Jacinto College opened in Pasadena in 1961, Maurine was one of the first teachers hired. In 1975, she helped open the North Campus and retired as Business Division Chair in 1995. She taught forty-seven years and strongly believed in public education, the community college system, and the Democratic Party. She was a hard worker and rarely missed work, but she was not an all-work-and-no-play person. Maurine loved to have a good time and to laugh. She was a great sport as long as her hair did not get messed up. She was always well coifed and well dressed with a perfect manicure she had done herself. Whether riding horses with her grandchildren at Sequoia National Park, driving to the top of Pike’s Peak with her pre-teen daughter and teenaged brother, or flying to Lake Tahoe for bridge and the casino, Maurine had fun, and those with her did, too. Maurine had life-long friends. She was loyal and considerate and kind, and people loved and respected her. At the bridge table or a casino, though, her competitiveness, her keen intellect, and her singlemindedness were shown. She played to win. She was a wonderful mother, an extraordinary Ninny to her grandchildren Mary Elizabeth and husband Oscar, Catherine and husband Arnaud, and Daniel, and a cherished great-grandmother to Shelby and Gavin; Tomas, Gabriel, and Samantha; Andre and Charolette; and Emma. She lived a life of integrity, generosity, and love, and we will miss her. The family would like to thank Rayfell McCullough for the love, loyalty, and care she gave my mother for the last seven years and which kept Mother as healthy and happy as possible. Maurine is predeceased by her parents, her sister Mary Nell Standley Baugh, and her brothers Darrell Standley and Johnny Standley. She is survived by her sister Jo Lewis of Pasadena, her daughter Constance Wilson Pasho of Crockett, her grandchildren, their spouses, and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her aunt Vivian Farris of Bryan, her beloved nieces and nephews, and many cousins. A memorial service honoring the life of Maurine Wilson will be held at First United Methodist Church of Madisonville of Sunday, October 1, and two o’ clock in the afternoon.
