Barbara Ann Dunbar

Barbara Ann Dunbar passed away peacefully in Boerne, Texas, on March 26, 2026, at the age of 85. She was born on November 2, 1940, in Houston, Texas, to Gerald Allen and Esther Mae Merchant. Barbara dedicated many years of service to the Aldine Independent School District, where she began her career as a food service worker and later became a school bus driver for Humble & Spring ISD. She took great pride in her work and the relationships she built along the way. A woman of strong faith, Barbara and her husband, Richard, raised their seven children in the Church of the Nazarene. She was an active member of Woodsdale/Northbelt Church of the Nazarene in Houston, where she formed many lifelong friendships and found a deep sense of community. Barbara’s greatest joy in life was her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were truly the center of her world. During the last six months of her life, while residing at Cibolo Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boerne, she formed many new friendships and found joy in simple pleasures. She especially enjoyed playing bingo and dominoes, working on word puzzles, sipping her favorite peach tea, and cheering on the Houston Astros. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kristi (Peel) Livingston, LVN for the love and compassion she showed while caring for Barbara, as well as to the CNA's, Mona Flores, Pattsy Hernandez, Joe Nerios, Melina Levingston, and Brayan Vera, for their gentle and dedicated care. A very special appreciation is extended to Jane Blomqvist with Embrace Hospice for guiding and supporting our family with such compassion through the final stages of our mother’s life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Francis Dunbar; her daughter, Connie Elliott; her parents, Gerald and Esther Merchant; her sisters, Mary Hardy and Geraldine McNeil (and her husband, Robert); and her brothers, Clarence and Jimmy Merchant. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Barwig (Rick), Peggy Peel (Bubba), and Gina Wilson; her sons, Randy Dunbar (Toni), Allen Dunbar, and Sean Dunbar; and her bonus children, Diana Williams (whose husband, Charles, passed in 2025), Melissa Rzeszutek (Eddie), and Rick Dunbar (Roxan). She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Emma Merchant; her cousin, Larry Merchant; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Madisonville, Texas, on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Day Funeral Home. She will be forever loved and dearly missed by all who knew her.
