Sheriff James E. “Ed” Fannin, 80, of Madisonville; passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 in Bryan, TX.  Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday; May 21st at Day Funeral Home Chapel.  Rev. Reagan Cooksey will officiate.  Burial will follow in The Madisonville City Cemetery.  The family will receive visitors from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday; May 20th at Day Funeral Home Chapel.

James E. (Ed) Fannin was born to William Franklin (Bill) and Susan Ethel (Lee) Fannin in Madisonville, Texas on September 17, 1929.  He was the youngest of three children and was mightily spoiled by his parents and siblings.  He completed high school in Madisonville where he was active in sports and attended Sam Houston State University.  He began a lengthy career in law enforcement with the Harris County Sheriffs Department.  He then returned to Madisonville and worked initially as a deputy for the Madison County Sheriffs Department.  He later ran for the office of Sheriff, winning the position and serving as Sheriff for almost 20 years.  He also worked as a juvenile probation officer, for Carter Enterprises and finally retired from the Texas Department of Corrections in 1999 after 10 years of service.  He loved his years in law enforcement and loved to regale family and friends with tales of his escapades while on the job. The only thing Ed loved more than his years in law enforcement was family.  He loved his girls and his grandkids. He was a frequent face at baseball games, football games, softball games, and rodeos.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Rubye and Elbert Mosley and his brother Herman L. Fannin.  He is survived by his daughters: Teri Zunker and husband Monty, and Michelle Poston, his grandchildren: Loren Henley and Lee Warrick, Zach Zunker, Garrison Zunker, Codi Poston, Hunter Williams, Emily Zunker, and one great granddaughter, Ann Warrick.  He is also survived by Teri’s mother, and Michelle’s Nomi, Wanda Moriarty, along with many friends who all loved their “Pop”.

Serving Ed as pallbearers are Thom Jones, Todd Williams, Zach Zunker, Garrison Zunker, Darren Lindsey and Robert Fannin.
